Canterbury SAREX – 6 August 2023

Alpine Rescue Canterbury took part in an Avalanche SAREX this weekend in Craigieburn’s Tarn Basin.

A fantastic opportunity for the many Canterbury SAR groups and teams to come together to test the Canterbury Avalanche Rescue Plan. The realistic scenario exercise involved using helicopter access from Texas Flat up to an avalanche in Tarn Basin burying 6 people of varying injuries, including two live patients.

It was excellent training to work with teams from Mt Cheeseman Ski Area, Porters Alpine Resort, Mt Hutt Ski Patrol, Methven Land Search & Rescue New Zealand , Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, Way to Go Helicopters, Avalanche Dogs, Amateur Radio Emergency Communications, Police and more to put our plan into action.

Given the nature of the snowpack this season, take care out in the hills and watch out for those persistent weak layers!
