On Saturday evening of July 31st 2022, our team received a call out for a missing skier last seen Saturday afternoon at Craigieburn Valley ski field.
Ski patrol set out to search in the night in blizzard conditions until early hours without success. The team was hampered by increasing avalanche danger due to large amounts of new snowfall overnight.
Our team was deployed Sunday morning, separating into multiple groups searching the area: a foot team up to Cass Saddle, ski team in Craigieburn ski areas assisting ski patrol, and helicopter aerial search.
The skier was located late afternoon Sunday, dehydrated, cold & exhausted but with no major injuries.
Thanks to all involved in this Canterbury wide response: Craigieburn ski patrol, West Coast LandSAR, Police SAR and local mountain guides.
A fantastic outcome for all involved!
