Missing Climber at Banks Peninsula Crag – 20 June 2022

Alpine Rescue Canterbury received a call from Police at 9pm on June 19th regarding a missing climber at Coffin Rock crag in the Banks Peninsula. Two teams of 2 travelled to the crag’s carpark arriving at 10:45pm.

A search of the crag’s surroundings was carried out in adverse weather conditions: cold, rain & wind.

Some of the climber’s equipment was found at the base of the crag.

Travel beyond the crag was difficult with thick scrub and gorse.

LandSAR teams arrived later in the evening to search the greater area beyond the rock climbing zone.

The team returned to base at 2:30am with no results.

Team members returned the next day and located the climber deceased below the crag.
